Doodles are marketed as the best of both worlds—non-shedding, allergy-friendly, easy-to-maintain family pets. But groomers across the country will tell you the truth: d oodles are one of the most difficult and labor-intensive coat types in grooming. And that’s before factoring in their size, temperament, poor at-home upkeep or misinformation from breeders.

At Roman’s Empire, we price based on time, labor, coat condition, and complexity—not breed discrimination. Doodles consistently require more of all four, which is why they have a higher price tag.

A Personal Note from Roman’s Empire

I speak from experience— Roman, the namesake of Roman’s Empire, is a Shih-Poo . By definition--a doodle (poodle mix).

Roman is incredibly special to me. He’s sweet, bright, and endlessly loyal. He has my heart and soul. But he’s also naturally timid and fearful by temperament —not the bold, outgoing personality many doodles are known for. This is a result of unethical breeding practices as reputable breeders temperament and health test both parents--something you very rarely get with doodles. Even with temperament and health testing, it is simply not guaranteed given the nature of early crossbreeding.

Despite being introduced to grooming at 8 weeks old and kept on a consistent, fear-free schedule, it took a lot of time, patience, and trust-building to get him comfortable with the grooming process.

Because of poor breeding, Roman developed periodontal disease within his first year of life and lives with a collapsed trachea . He requires regular maintenance and health monitoring, and his grooming needs are more demanding than the average dog’s.

There are currently no ethical doodle breeding programs —no consistent health testing, temperament screening, or breeding standards. This leads to unpredictable coat types, variable temperaments, and chronic health issues. It makes every doodle a gamble on all fronts —one that affects not just the owner but the dog’s overall well-being.

I understand the love people have for doodles—I love Roman with my whole heart. But loving a doodle means taking responsibility for their care, grooming, health, and emotional needs. It’s a commitment that goes beyond their appearance.

Roman is living proof with proper grooming introductions, care, training, maintenance, and frequency--even the most nervous doodles can become accustomed to grooming and find it relaxing. He falls asleep while drying, brushing, trimming, etc.

The Coat Conundrum

Doodle coats are a genetic wildcard. You might end up with loose, flat hair like a Golden Retriever, tight curls like a Poodle, or—most commonly—a dense, inconsistent hybrid coat that mats at lightning speed.

These coats:

Mat down to the skin if not brushed properly and consistently
Need frequent professional grooming to stay healthy and manageable

Add to that the size and density of most doodles, and a single groom can take triple the time and physical effort of a small, long-haired dog.

I prioritize your pet’s comfort, skin health, and safety over aesthetics pushed by online trends or fantasy "breed" expectations. Yes, I said it--doodles are not a breed and do not have a breed standard. This is fact.

This aids in the confusion and chaos with the subjective grooming terms and names of cuts or styles, there simply is no breed cut for doodles nor specialized cuts for them. You may get annoyed by our asking you to specify what you want, but the terms you give us often don't mean what you think they do or vary vastly from person-to-person.

Haircuts Don't Ruin the Coat—Neglect Does

Breeders and online forums love to parrot the idea that grooming “ruins” a doodle’s coat, especially if done before a year old. This is categorically false.

Coat texture and quality are dictated by genetics , not grooming. What actually ruins the coat—and the dog’s trust—is matting, neglect, and forced dematting from owners trying to avoid a necessary haircut.

By delaying grooming or brushing improperly, you’re making it more likely your doodle will end up needing to be shaved, stressed, or sedated down the road. Starting grooming early, keeping it consistent, and building positive routines is what creates a healthy coat and confident dog.

Refocusing: We Are Groomers, Not Trainers

While we are not professional dog trainers, grooming pets does involve moderate training to build trust and learn proper table manners. This is not done in a single session. A good, professional groomer uses their behavior and breed knowledge to guide each session with patience and awareness.

But when a pet comes in without any grooming experience--especially the older they are--or is aggressive, unruly, untrained, or simply not desensitized to the grooming environment and tools from the start, we're left in a risky position. As a cat owner, you know cats are incomparable to dogs. This applies to how their grooming sessions go as well. Cats have paper-thin skin that is very easy to cut, even on a perfect, tangle-free kitty. Cats are on an invisible, imperceivable turkey-timer when it comes to their handling and grooming tolerance--once they've had enough, there is no rewinding the clock for the day. With dogs, you can give them breaks to calm down, reset, and come back to finish the session, but cats do not operate this way.

Even sweet cats that have grooming experience have an inherently higher risk of injury than dogs since we are working against the clock. Almost all nicks on cats require stitches due to the thinness of their skin and how it splays open. When you throw aggression, stress-prone, or flighty behaviors into the mix, you are asking to injure or be injured--and if your groomer gets bit or scratched, services are halted, and they are required to go to the nearest hospital to start antibiotics as sepsis can set in within hours that can not only cost them a limb and or career, but can end their life. We don't fear monger here, but it is crucial to understand the risks that come with cat grooming.

Say a cat groomer requires two staff members for each cat groom like Roman's Empire, and they utilize those extra set of hands by forcing an aggressive, flighty, or stress-prone cat through the groom--there is bound to be a point where the cat tries to fight or flee--resulting in an injury on either or both sides. The pet grooming industry is entirely unregulated--meaning literally anyone can buy a pair of clippers and start taking clients. No license is required. No safety or handling course. No hands-on training. And unfortunately, that lack of accountability leads to a wide range of service quality at best, with increased risk for severe injury at worst--and some very real risks to your pet's safety and comfort.

Experience Doesn't Always Mean Expertise

Many pet owners are told to "look for someone with lots of experience", but the truth is: years don't always equal skill. Clients have shared stories of seasoned groomers who were rough with their pets, rushed through the service, or used outdated and unsafe techniques. What you really want is someone who's invested in continuing education and certified in animal safety and behavior at a minimum. Some of the worst work and most abusive handling I've seen came from groomers with over 20 years of experience that chose to not only disregard continued education--but laugh at the thought of it.

Red Flags You Shouldn't Ignore

You don't receive any intake questions. A reputable groomer will always ask about your pet's health, behavior, and past grooming experiences. If they don't--it's a sign they may treat all pets the same, regardless of individual needs, which could cause health and safety issues.
They Don't Require Proof of Vaccination. I know this is controversial for some, however in the state of California, all groomers are legally required to have proof of vaccinations on file in the event an accident occurs. Skirting this law endangers staff and every other dog in the salon. Now, you can provide a vet note exempting your pet from vaccinations for health reasons if that is a concern.
You Feel Uncomfortable Asking Questions or You are Met with Defensiveness when You Do. You should never feel uncomfortable, dismissed, or brushed off when asking questions for clarification. Good groomers will inform you of any and all changes in health and behavior or report business as usual and are transparent if your pet had anxiety or fear surrounding the dryer or getting their nails done. If they refuse to let you see the grooming area, won't explain their grooming process or policies or are vague, or discourage you from staying nearby, run for the hills. It is normal practice to not allow clients to stay at the salon or go into the groom room when they are working due to insurance and safety risks, however they should have no problem with you waiting nearby.
Poor Hygiene or Facility Conditions. If the space smells bad or if tools or equipment look dirty or poorly maintained, you will be jeopardizing your pet's health by making or keeping your appointment. Due to the nature of the job, salons--mobile or stationary--have high humidity which can cause mold if not properly sealed and maintained. Dirty or poorly maintained equipment not only have an increased risk of injuring your pet but make them susceptible to infection if injured.
Bashing Other Groomers or Businesses. There is no reason any good groomer will have anything negative to say about other groomers or salons in the area. If you bring a choppy cut from one salon to another to fix it, it should be met with questions - not condemning the previous groomer. The grooming industry is surprisingly catty, and unfortunately such people in the clique feel it appropriate to put others down to lift themselves up. Here are some tips to adopt at home.

Brush Often--and Brush Right

The #1 secret to a healthy coat is regular brushing, even for shorthairs. It removes debris, spreads natural oils, prevents mats, and keeps your dog happy and cute.

Shorthair breeds: 1-2 times per week using a rubber curry brush to remove dead coat.
Longhair breeds: Every day to every other day using a slicker brush and metal greyhound comb. Use the slicker brush with a pat-and-pull technique in small increments until you no longer hear or feel resistance, then go over the entire coat with a metal greyhound comb, making sure to reach the skin. Only brushing the top layers of fur do not prevent tangles and matting at the roots. The comb should effortlessly go through the entire coat all the way to the skin.
Double-coated breeds: Every 1-3 days using a slicker brush, pin rake, and undercoat rake and check your work with a metal greyhound comb.

Do Not Brush Matting or Compaction. If you cannot see the skin, seek a professional. Brushing matting or compaction causes pain, tenderness, and can cause injury. Matting damages the coat and brushing it out damages it even further--making it mat up even faster and more severe.

Keep Up with Eyes and Ears

Grooming isn't just about the coat. Wipe your dog's eyes to prevent staining and buildup that can eat away at the skin, and check ears weekly for debris, odor, and inflammation.
